The 82nd Airborne during World War II
Campaigns

Shoulder Flag worn during D-Day
The 82nd Airborne is credited with participating in 7 campaigns during World War II. However, all of its assigned regiments and battalions did not participate in every campaign. I have grouped the campaigns according to the country of their occurence with the exception of Sicily.

(Picture above right: An original shoulder flag worn by Airborne forces during D-Day)

These campaigns are Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Anzio, Normandy, the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace and Central Europe.

Because the 504th ranks were depleted due to the Italian campaigns it was not a unit participant in the historic June 6, 1944 Normandy invasion. Instead it was retained in the UK as an 82nd A/B Division reserve element. However, a group of selected 504 volunteers -- approximately 50 -- were involved in that campaign in the capacity of pathfinders. Six of that volunteer group are listed as KIA casualties.
